Andrew Gillum’s Wife, R. Jai, Says That His Bisexuality Hasn’t Changed Their Marriage: There Is Nothing Different

Andrew Gillum’s wife, R. Jai Gillum, says that his sexual identity hasn’t changed the dynamics of their marriage. As we previously reported, former mayor of Tallahassee Andrew Gillum came out as bisexual this past September. Andrew Gillum made headlines in March of 2020 after news broke that he was found intoxicated in a Miami hotel room with crystal meth and another man. Nude photos of Andrew Gillum laying on the hotel room floor from the infamous night were leaked online as well. During a recent interview with GQ the former politician’s wife, R. Jai, shared that her husband’s bisexuality hasn’t had a negative impact on their relationship. She said,

“I had a lot of questions, some of which he could answer, some of which he couldn’t. But I guess maybe it was that confidence in me really believing what he had to say about me and us [that] made it better.… It made me want to at least say, ‘Okay, let’s see. Let’s figure this thing out.’”

She continued,

“What mainly concerned me, it was for me: What does this mean for our relationship? How does this work?”

R. Jai added,

“Once we got past all that, nothing has changed [from] the Andrew that I’ve dated on and off for about six years, Andrew that I’ve known as a friend for even longer. So now I’m like, ‘We’re just a couple dealing with the same things that other people deal with.’ There is nothing different.”

During the interview, R. Jai also recalled the moment she found out about her husband’s Miami hotel room scandal and what her initial reaction was. She said,

“I am so confused because it just sounds like something out of a Lifetime movie. Police, O.D.? It just doesn’t make any sense.”

According to R. Jai, she told her husband that he needed to get help if they were going to stay together.

“If you want a fighting chance at your family, you’ve got to get help.”

Andrew Gillum and R. Jai have been married for 12 years and have 3 children together.
