Chance The Rapper Is Suing His Ex-Manager For $3 Million, Alleges He Damaged His Reputation
Chance The Rapper has taken legal action against his former manager.
He sued Pat Corcoran in Cook County Court with accusations that he took advantage of his position with Chance The Rapper, using the Chicago native’s celebrity status to get his own business opportunities for his management company. Chance The Rapper also alleged that Pat Corcoran’s business dealings made him look bad and damaged his reputation as he demanded kickbacks from vendors to serve as the cost of working with him.
He’s suing for more than $1 million for each of the three counts.
He said in court documents,
“Mr. Corcoran has been paid in full under his management services contract with Mr. Bennett. Yet he chose to file a groundless and insulting lawsuit that ignores his own improper self-dealing and incompetence. Mr. Bennett has moved to dismiss the majority of that meritless lawsuit, and filed his own lawsuit to remedy the harm that Mr. Corcoran caused through his breaches of duty. Mr. Bennett trusts the legal system to reveal the truth of the parties’ relationship in due course.”
Chance The Rapper’s lawsuit is in response to Pat Corcoran’s $3 million claim he filed against Chance’s businesses, alleging he racked up more than $2.5 million in expenses that weren’t reimbursed. He said that he and CHance “redefined the music industry”, but that things went left after Chance failed to take heed to his advice and released what he described as a “subpar” album in 2019. He pointed out that Chance’s father, Ken, and his younger brother Taylor Bennett, replaced him.
Chance, on the other hand, alleged that Corcoran is a “marginally competent business manager” but also a “bullying and abrasive self-promoter.”
Corcoran told The Chicago Tribune in a statement,
“Rather than confront the substance of Pat the Manager’s claims, the defendants have elected to attack Mr. Corcoran’s character and rewrite history. The aspersions cast by the Chance camp are offensive and do not reflect the reality of the relationship that Mr. Corcoran and Mr. Bennett developed over many years of collaboration.”
“The results of the pair’s fruitful teamwork — and the contrasting results when Mr. Corcoran was sidelined — are evident to the public. Mr. Corcoran is proud of the work he did on Mr. Bennett’s behalf, and is proud of the work he continues to perform for other talented artists. Mr. Corcoran looks forward to presenting his claims and airing out the defendants’ baseless accusations in court.”
Chance also filed to dismiss Corcoran’s lawsuit.
