NBC Will Not Air The Golden Globes In 2022 Because Of Diversity Controversy
NBC will not be airing the Golden Globes in 2022. NBC has had a long-standing relationship with Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the nonprofit organization responsible for the awards. The organization’s collaborative relationship has spanned well over a decade, but ties have been temporarily cut after controversy surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s lack of diversity and ethical questions related to financial benefits given to some members were called into question.
According to CNN, the questionable actions of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have prompted major outlets, including Netflix & Warner Media, to announce they will not be participating in any Globes-related events until all issues regarding diversity and ethics have been adequately addressed and resolved.
An investigation by the Los Angeles Times was published in February. A point of contention noted in that investigation was there are no black journalists in the HFPA.
NBC released this statement:
“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes.”
The network added, [assuming HFPA]
“executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”
