Country Singer Morgan Wallen Speaks On Being Caught Using The N-Word: I Didn’t Mean It In Any Derogatory Manner At All
Country singer Morgan Wallen has taken the time to clear the air and explain why he was caught using a racial slur. As previously reported, earlier this year video footage was leaked online of Morgan Wallen, 28, using the n-word as he referred to one of his friends, who is also a white male. In the video, Morgan Wallen and his friends are standing in the driveway of his Tennessee home after a night out. Wallen, who appears to be drunk, instructs one of his friends to help someone in the group. He can be heard on the video footage saying,
“take care of this “p*ssy-a** motherf*cker”
Before the ‘Wasted On You’ singer enters his home he adds,
“take care of this p*ssy-a** n*****.”
During a recent interview with Good Morning America’s Michael Strahan, Wallen addressed his controversial moment. When asked if it just happened out of nowhere he replied,
“No, I don’t think it just happened, you know. I was around some of my friends and we say dumb stuff together. It was – in our minds, it’s playful. That sounds ignorant but that’s really where it came from.”
He added,
“I wouldn’t say [I use the word] frequently, no. Not frequently. Just around this certain group of friends, I would say.”
Wallen then explained what happened the night he used the racial slur.
“It’s one of my best friends. We were all clearly drunk and I was asking his girlfriend to take care of him because he was drunk and he was leaving. I didn’t mean it in any derogatory manner at all.”

Wallen revealed that following his now-viral incident he checked himself into rehab to reflect on his drinking.
“I went and checked myself into rehab for 30 days. I spent some time out in San Diego, California. Just trying to figure it out. Why am I acting this way? Do I have an alcohol problem? Do I have a deeper issue?”
He also addressed the reports of his music sales spiking after the video of him saying the n-word was released.
“We tried to calculate what the number of how much it actually spiked, you know, from this incident and we got to a number somewhere around $500,000 and we decided to donate that money to some organizations. BMAC (Black Music Action Coalition) being the first one.”

Wallen did previously issue an apology after the video leak. He said in a statement,
“I’m embarrassed and sorry. I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back. There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologize for using the word. I promise to do better.”
Following Morgan Wallen’s use of the n-word, multiple radio stations decided to pull his music from their rotation. His contract with Big Loud Records was suspended “indefinitely” and the country singer was banned from consideration of winning any awards at the 2021 Academy of Country Music Awards.
