Whitney Houston’s Upcoming Biopic Gets New Director Due To Creative Differences
Change is in the air as production continues for Whitney Houston‘s upcoming biopic!
Whitney Houston fans will soon get a chance to watch her story in an upcoming biopic, I Wanna Dance with Somebody. However, there have recently been some production-level changes to the project.
Yesterday (Wednesday, Sept. 1st), it was announced that Kasi Lemmons has been brought on to direct I Wanna Dance with Somebody. Kasi Lemmons has already directed a number of noteworthy films, including Eve’s Bayou, Black Nativity, and Harriet.
Specifically, Kasi Lemmons has reportedly been included in the project to replace Stella Meghie. While Stella Meghie was initially slated to direct Whitney Houston‘s biopic, she reportedly stepped back due to creative differences. However, Stella Meghie is reportedly still onboard the project as an executive producer.
Kasi Lemmons reacted to the news by saying:
“Early in my writing career I developed two projects for Whitney, and I had the opportunity to meet her. She was a tremendous, incomparable artist, and her story is as awe-inspiring as it is tragic. I feel privileged to be part of bringing her life story and music to the audience.”

Additionally, record producer Clive Davis–who worked with Whitney Houston since the 1980s–spoke positively about Kasi Lemmons‘ new role. He stated:
“Kasi Lemmons not only brings a highly acclaimed, award-winning track record but possesses a clear understanding of Whitney as the matchless icon who triumphed musically while valiantly struggling with addiction.”
I Wanna Dance with Somebody will premier in theatres in November 2022.
