Mc Lyte Now Has Her Name Trademarked After 35 Years [VIDEO]

Mc Lyte Gets Trademark For Name After 35 Years

The theme in the music industry these days is definitely all about ownership.

Many artists have been vocal about owning their masters from Ashanti to Chris Brown. These artists have shed light on the possibilities of bad business practices but also the hope of turning it around.

Another artist that has joined the club of ownership is MC Lyte. The rapper recently announced that she now has her name trademarked. Lyte, real name Lana Michele Moorer, expressed in a video how important it is to own your own brand. She captioned the post,

For years I was signed to a major label and they owned the rights to my name. I created the name Lyte in 1985 that helped solidify my career in Hip Hop. I signed to the infamous @firstprioritymusic and they added the MC, appropriately due. We were blessed to sign a huge deal with a major label. Not too long ago I received a call from the OG Nat Robinson who shared the copyright the label owned of my name was about to expire and if I wanted to grab it I should do it now. I put COO @lynnrichardson on top of it and she put it in the hands of Trademark Attorney @michellejmilleresq and the rest is history!

The announcement is a huge accomplishment for MC Lyte. The hip-hop legend became the first female MC to release an album, “Lyte as a Rock” in 1988. She was the first hip-hop artist to perform at Carnegie Hall, the first woman hip-hop artist to have a gold single, and a solo Grammy nomination. She is also the first woman to have been inducted into the VH-1’s Hiphop Honors (2006), and the first woman to receive BET’s “I Am Hip Hop” Icon Lifetime Achievement Award. (2013).
