Jay-Z Says Beyoncé Is ‘An Evolution’ Of Michael Jackson: He Never Had A Coachella

Jay-Z Claims Beyoncé Is ‘An Evolution’ Of Michael Jackson: He Never Had A Coachella
Is Beyoncé a modern-day version of Michael Jackson?
Last night (Tuesday, Dec. 21st), Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) jumped into a Twitter Space with Alicia Keys. During the “Empire State of Mind” artists’ conversation, Jay-Z began giving his wife, Beyoncé, her flowers–even comparing her to Michael Jackson, the “King of Pop.” Jay-Z stated:
“Bey’s gonna be mad at this for saying this, but Michael Jackson never had a Coachella. She’s an evolution of him because she watched him at 9. And [the kids are] the same.”
He went on to add:
“Beyoncé is gonna be one of the best singers we ever heard because she is such a student.”
Jay-Z was specifically referring to Beyoncé‘s 2018 Coachella performance, which is often referred to as “Beychella.” The performance was considered highly significant, as the Houston native was the first Black woman to headline the predominately white festival. She also notably paid tribute to HBCU culture during her set.
While on the subject, it’s worth pointing out that the very first Coachella festival went down in 1999 and became an annual event beginning in 2001–right around the same time that Michael Jackson stopped releasing new music (his last studio album was 2001’s Invincible).

Michael Jackson
Jay-Z‘s comments about Beyoncé and Michael Jackson came just shortly after he also addressed the prospect of him doing a Verzuz battle. Earlier during his conversation with Alicia Keys, Jay-Z confidently said:
“There’s nobody that can stand on that stage with me, no disrespect, everyone’s amazing, they’ve done what they’ve done, but no one can stand on that stage with me.”
