J Balvin Says ‘I Am Not Afro-Latino’ After Winning ‘Afro-Latino Artist Of The Year’ Award, African Entertainment Awards Renames Category To ‘Best Latin Artist Of The Year’
The African Entertainment Awards is seemingly working overtime as they explain the meaning behind their ‘Afro-Latino Artist Of The Year’ Award and why the accolade went to a white-Latino.
The African Entertainment Awards USA (AEA) is in the hot seat for awarding Colombian singer/rapper J Balvin, 36, ‘Afro-Latino Artist Of The Year.’
Following his latest achievement, J Balvin took to his Instagram stories and shared that, despite the category of the award, he is not Afro-Latino. The ‘In Da Getto’ rapper reshared a video of AEA’s president speaking on his controversial win and captioned the post,
“I am not Afro-Latino, but thank you for giving me a place in the contribution of Afrobeat music and entertainment.”
AEA’s prescient released a statement and video to the music awards’ official USA Instagram page. In part, he said, this category is,
“for the people who have contributed to the African culture [and] not based on your race [but] based on your contribution to the African culture.”
He added,
“Our category is not based on color. It’s based on again, the contribution from these artists who are contributing to the African culture. Yes, you can be black-Latino and be nominated. Just like you can be white-Latino and be nominated. Just like we have black and white Africans. You know, that’s how we see it.”
In the caption for the video, AEA shared that the category has been renamed ‘Best Latin Artist Of The Year.’
“After listening to the concern of our audience we have decided to maintain the purpose of the award but changed the name to Best Latin Artist Of the year.”
