R. Kelly Confirmed Positive For Covid-19, Granted Request To Delay His Appeal, Reportedly Can’t Even Speak To Counsel By Telephone

Update #1: R. Kelly has been granted a two-week extension to appeal the conviction he received in his criminal sexual assault case back in September 2021. R. Kelly’s legal team now has until February 17th to file the documents necessary to begin fighting the conviction.

Original Story: Were you wondering about the health and well-being of R. Kelly? Well, a lawyer for the fallen star has announced that R. Kelly has tested positive for Covid-19. The convicted crooner is currently being detained at Brooklyn, New York’s Metropolitan Detention Center where he is said to have contracted the virus. R. Kelly has been held at the center located in the Sunset Park neighborhood since August 2021, just before his sex-trafficking conviction last September. The news of his condition could delay R. Kelly’s request for an appeal in his criminal case.

The infamous 55 year old former singer recently hired Bill Cosby’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, who saw success with the release of Bill Cosby. Bonjean, who replaced the legal team from R. Kelly’s trial has reportedly requested a two week extension to file post-trial motions for the appeal. Reports claim that the documents were meant to be filed by Thursday.

There are also reports of a letter written to Judge Ann Donnelly in which Jennifer Bonjean wrote that R. Kelly will require the additional time to recover from the virus so that he is able to “meaningfully participate” in his post-trial defense. The lawyer alleges that R. Kelly is too ill to even speak with his legal team over the phone.

Kelly knowingly infected victims with Herpes. Since his arrest, R. Kelly has made many attempts to thwart the system. Kelly has claimed to have been physically assaulted, sick with diabetes, and denied access to his lawyers among other things in an attempt to be released. R. Kelly’s trial reportedly spanned the length of 25 days, calling more than 40 witnesses and 11 victims to the stand ultimately resulting in his conviction. What are your thoughts on this case?
