DaBaby’s Legal Team Says Recently Released Footage Of Fatal 2018 Walmart Shooting Was Already Seen By Prosecutors, Rapper Stands By Self-Defense Claim
It looks like DaBaby, born Jonathan Kirk, isn’t losing any sleep over the never-before-seen security footage of himself fatally shooting 19-year-old Jaylin Craig recently making its way online.
According to reports, DaBaby’s legal team feels that the footage actually proves the rapper’s self-defense claim. The 30-year-old rapper has always said that his actions were due to him trying to protect himself and his family. His attorneys also revealed that the footage is nothing new to prosecutors, who previously watched it back in 2018 and concluded that the “BOP” rapper acted in self-defense, which is why he wasn’t prosecuted for homicide. They added,
“Witnesses were interviewed and corroborated Mr. Kirk’s statement. The entirety of the surveillance video was viewed and determined to corroborate Mr. Kirk’s statement … Mr. Kirk was protecting himself and his family at the time of the shooting.”
The infamous footage was reportedly also viewed by a Mecklenburg County judge in connection to the misdemeanor charge the DaBaby was given for not having the proper permits for his gun.

As previously reported, On Nov. 5, 2018, DaBaby fatally shot Craig while in a Charlotte-area Walmart. DaBaby has always claimed the shooting was in self-defense and said he was threatened by the teenager and his friend. However, Craig’s family tells a different story and claims that the rap star mistook Craig and his friend, two fans of DaBaby, as people who had an issue with him and wanted trouble.
Earlier this week, the security footage of the incident was released to the public for the first time and some think it shows DaBaby as the aggressor. During a recent interview, Craig’s mother called DaBaby out for his actions. She said,
“I feel like they just swept it up under the rug. [DaBaby] knows what he did. I’m not doing this for no fame or anything, because at the end of the day, Jaylin Craig is gone.”
She added,
“I don’t look at him as no DaBaby. I look at him like, ‘You’re Jonathan Kirk and you murdered Jaylin Craig.’”
Craig’s family is hopeful the footage will shine a light on what they believe truly happened and bring an independent investigation into how the case was handled.
DaBaby shot and killed 19-year-old Jaylin Craig in 2018, a shooting the rapper claims was in self-defense.
New security footage obtained by Rolling Stone shows that DaBaby appears to be the aggressor, and contradicts key aspects of his version of events. https://t.co/TGZjJ0Da6o pic.twitter.com/M7kbKur3U9
