John Legend Says ‘It Was Difficult’ As He Reveals He Initially Hesitated To Publicly Share Chrissy Teigen’s Miscarriage In 2020

John Legend is opening up about a very difficult time in his life.

Amid the news that John Legend, 43, and Chrissy Teigen, 36, are expecting another baby, the “All Of Me” singer revealed during a recent interview that he initially struggled with the decision to publicly announce Chrissy Teigen’s 2020 pregnancy loss. He explained,

“It was difficult, and I was hesitant to share it. I think Chrissy was really right in encouraging us to share it because I think it really was powerful for a lot of people.”

John continued,

“Way more people than anybody realizes go through this. They told us they felt alone a lot of times, and us sharing our experience helped people feel less alone and feel like there were other people going through it and there was a community of people going through it.”

He added,

“I think it was a really powerful, wise decision by Chrissy to share it because it helped a lot of people.”

As previously reported, the couple– who married in September 2013– announced they were trying for another baby earlier this year after the stillborn birth of their son Jack in Sept. 2020.

In April of 2021, Chrissy Teigen spoke about being in therapy to deal with the loss of their son Jack and her struggle with carrying children.

At the time she said:

“I’m in therapy and something that I talk about often is, I just don’t understand how I can’t [carry children] because I have a really healthy uterus now. I think one lingering thing is that Jack was so healthy, and it was just something with my body that was not right at that time.”

The pair are already parents to Luna, 6, and Miles, 4, who were both conceived using in vitro fertilization (IVF), which was also used for her current pregnancy.

Last week, television personality, Chrissy Teigen took to Instagram and announced that she and her Grammy-Award-winning husband John Legend are expecting again, after the tragic loss of their son Jack nearly two years ago. In her post, she wrote:

“The last few years have been a blur of emotions to say the least, but joy has filled our home and hearts again. 1 billion shots later (in the leg lately, as u can see!) we have another on the way.”

She continued,

“Every appointment I’ve said to myself, ‘ok if it’s healthy today I’ll announce’ but then I breathe a sigh of relief to hear a heartbeat and decide I’m just too nervous still. I don’t think I’ll ever walk out of an appointment with more excitement than nerves but so far, everything is perfect and beautiful and I’m feeling hopeful and amazing. Ok phew it’s been very hard keeping this in for so long!”

Although John Legend and Chrissy Teigen had a lot of support from their family and friends, the “Glory” singer noted that there was no magic way to make someone feel better about a miscarriage. He explained,

“It’s hard to try to comfort anyone that’s going through it because there’s no real comfort. You’re always going to feel that loss. It kind of spreads over time, so it doesn’t feel as heavy over time, but you’ll never forget it.”

The EGOT winner is channeling some of his pain into his art. His new two-disc album, titled Legend– which is set to release in September– features songs inspired by his late son. John Legend said,

“Some of the songs are about are about coping with loss and grief [and] when you feel broken.”
