Viola Davis’ Latest Film ‘The Woman King’ Leads Box Office W/ $19 Million Debut
“The Woman King,” an original war drama starring Viola Davis, dominated domestic box office charts in its opening weekend!
The original war drama film collected a strong $19 million in ticket sales from 3,765 North American cinemas for Sony Pictures Entertainment over the weekend, surpassing what analysts had initially predicted. Independent tracking services projected “The Woman King” would kick off with $15 million to $18 million, while Sony estimated a debut closer to $12 million.
This is great news for Sony being that the film cost $50 million to produce, not including the tens of millions in marketing expenses, including a premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

With little competition for older ticket buyers in the weeks ahead, “The Woman King” could ultimately generate in the vicinity of $100 million in the United States and Canada, according to box office analysts. As no surprise, the majority of opening weekend crowds were female, with women accounting for 61% of ticket buyers between Friday and Sunday.
60% of moviegoers were Black, 19% were Caucasian, 11% were Hispanic and 10% were Asian. About 58 percent of the audience for “The Woman King” was over the age of 35, according to Sony, with 39 percent over the age of 45.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood from a screenplay by Dana Stevens, “The Woman King” focuses on an all-female warrior unit known as the Agojie, who protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey from the 17th to 19th centuries.
Set in the 1820s, the film stars Viola Davis as a general who trains the next generation of warriors to fight their enemies.
According to reports, “The Woman King” received stellar reviews and positive word-of-mouth. More important, ticket buyers gave the PG-13 movie a rare A-plus grade in CinemaScore exit polls.
Actress Kerry Washington showed her support to Viola Davis and the cast of “The Woman King” by buying out several movie theaters across the country, which allowed several moviegoers to see the movie for free.
