Former President Donald Trump Expected To Announce 2024 Presidential Run
Former President Donald Trump is expected to announce Tuesday (Nov. 15) that he’s running for president for the third time.
According to reports, he plans to announce his candidacy at 9 p.m. ET at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. He has been hinting in recent weeks and months that he would run again. Earlier this month, Donald Trump told rallygoers in Iowa:
“I will very, very probably do it again.”
Reportedly, some Trump allies urged the former president to wait until after the Dec. 6 Georgia runoff election between Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker, however, Trump ignored them. He allegedly thought it would look weak if he just announced an exploratory committee and not his campaign.
This news comes as the Republican party is still reeling from voters’ rejection of several of their candidates for key races — many of whom had been endorsed by Donald Trump. Some Republicans even blamed Trump for boosting a slate of extremist candidates who were ultimately rejected by independents and did little to motivate voters.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker, a Republican, suggested Trump’s hold on the GOP ultimately affected their chances of a “red wave.”
Baker told sources,
“There’s significant influence from the former president and I think that influence probably hurt the party and hurt the party’s chances on Election Day.”
Donald Trump is also facing criticism from his former vice president, Mike Pence. The two have been at odds ever since the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol.
When asked by ABC News whether he believes Trump should be president again, Pence said it was up to the American people, but,
“I think we’ll have better choices in the future.”
According to reports, Mike Pence is also a potential candidate for president in 2024.
While Trump’s influence in the party remains strong, the failed races of many Trump-endorsed candidates, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ dominant performance last week, and Republicans’ failure to capture the Senate have raised some doubts about the former president’s 2024 prospects.
Trump has also entered the presidential race with personal and professional legal battles that have not yet been resolved.
