Nicci Gilbert Says ‘P-Valley’ Receiving Six NAACP Image Award Noms Is ‘Disappointing’ As She Awaits Court Date In Copyright Infringement Lawsuit Against Series

Nicci Gilbert is not here for “P-Valley” receiving six NAACP Image Award nominations.

While the R&B singer is best known as the main vocalist for the 90s group Brownstone, her most recent media exposure is a result of a copyright infringement lawsuit she has brought against the popular Starz series and its creator, Katori Hall.

Nicci Gilbert claims Katori Hall ripped off the concept for “P-Valley” from her 2010 stage play — and she is not here for the show possibly receiving an award she’s “always wanted.”

In a post shared via Instagram on Friday (Jan. 13), Nicci Gilbert said,

“I’ve never been big on Awards. The One Award that I always wanted to win was an @naacpimageaward I’m a strong woman, but the fact that a show that I’ve been in a torturous Intellectual Property battle with since 2020 is nominated for 6 is so disappointing.”

In her caption, Gilbert wrote,

“I’m not gonna let this ruin my dope a*s 2023 but while they are giving out all these nominations, Can I get a Court Date?”

She added,

“It’s so hard to watch people celebrate this show. I guess Like MTS I have to take the BS mental, financial and physical exhaustion until a Jury hears my case … #Enough#Fight4WIRF#PVALLEY”

According to its Starz description, “P-Valley” is a drama television series based on Katori Hall‘s play “P*ssy Valley.” The series stars Brandee Evans, Nicco Annan, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Elarica Johnson. It follows various people who work at a fictional strip club in the Mississippi Delta.
