Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey Among High-Profile Celebrities Who Have Lost Blue Checkmarks As Elon Musk Rolls Out New Process
Bye bye blue checkmarks!
Elon Musk has kept his word and purged Twitter of “legacy checkmarks,” or those from accounts verified under the prior administration of the company.
Now, a blue checkmark symbol on Twitter essentially denotes that the account belongs to someone who is paying Elon Musk, one of the richest people in the world, $8 per month for the perk. Following the $44 billion purchase of Twitter in November, the multibillionaire made a promise to eliminate the outdated blue-check mark system, calling the prior verification process of the firm “corrupt and nonsensical.”
Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Justin Timberlake, Shakira, and Jennifer Lopez are among of the most popular celebrities on Twitter who have lost their legacy verification status. Donald Trump, who Elon Musk restored to Twitter last October after it had banned him following the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, also lost his verified status on Thursday.
Barack Obama, who has 132 million Twitter followers, still has a blue checkmark and a description stating that it was added
“because it’s an affiliate of @TheObamaOffice on Twitter.”
Musk‘s Twitter account — which has more followers than anyone else with 125 million — also states that he is
“an affiliate of @Twitter on Twitter.”
Twitter had more than 420,000 verified accounts prior to Musk‘s modification, which allowed anyone to receive a blue checkmark. The original purpose of Twitter’s verification program was to aid users in determining whether a well-known user was, in fact, who they claimed to be in order to prevent confusion with imposters.
