Lupita Nyong’o Says She Has No Problem Being Associated w/ Janelle Monáe As She Addresses Dating Rumors
Despite how things may seem, Lupita Nyong’o is not dating Janelle Monáe.
The Black Panther star and the singer/actress reportedly grew close after meeting at the Met Gala in 2014. Since then, many have speculated that their relationship is more than platonic — and Lupita Nyong’o can understand why.
In a recent interview, Lupita Nyong’o shared,
“[Janelle Monáe] has magnetism that they were obviously picking up on. She is that enigmatic. People are curious about enigmatic people.”
In addition to not being surprised by the relationship rumors, Nyong’o said she has no problem in any way being affiliated with the “extremely gifted” Grammy-nominated artist.
She continued,
“It’s built into her spirit. Her openness creates intimacy onscreen. It’s really cool to see her move from one thing to another and do it with such mastery. … Just because you’re a close friend of hers doesn’t mean you get to know everything about her. I think that’s what makes her interesting as an artist.”
Other rumors have claimed that Janelle Monáe — who identifies as nonbinary and is pansexual — is dating Creed actress Tessa Thompson. However, the “Make Me Feel” singer has made it clear that she doesn’t believe in discussing her romantic relationships.
As for Nyong’o, she is actually head over heels for television host Selema Masekela, whom she went Instagram official with in December.
Masekela was reportedly seated behind Nyong’o on a trip out of Los Angeles in 2016 when they first met. Reportedly, when Selema Masekela couldn’t think of the perfect way to start a conversation with the actress, he turned to Twitter for suggestions. He allegedly tweeted,
“Hypothetically speaking of course…Let’s say you’re seated behind Lupita Nyong’o on an airplane, what would be your opening line?”
Lupita Nyong'o just made her relationship with Selema Masekela Instagram official.
