Shakira Learned Ex Gerard Piqué ‘Betrayed’ Her While Her Father Was In The ICU: ‘My Home Was Falling Apart’

Shakira is getting candid about a difficult time she faced.

In a new interview, the Columbian singer recalled finding out she was “betrayed” by her ex Gerard Piqué all while her father was in the ICU due to a bad fall. She shared,

“Everything was happening all at once, my home was falling apart. I was finding out in the press that I had been betrayed while my father was in the ICU. I thought I wouldn’t survive so much.”

As previously reported, Shakira made headlines in June 2022 when she and her longtime partner, Gerard Piqué announced they were breaking up after 11 years together. At the time of their split, there were rumors circulating that the former professional soccer player cheated on the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer.

The former couple announced the end of their relationship in a joint statement:

“We regret to confirm that we are separating. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy.”

For Shakira, her father’s condition made her split from her then-boyfriend much more intense.

“The man that has loved me the most, my father, wasn’t by my side when I most needed him. I couldn’t speak to him or receive the advice from my best friend that I so needed.”

When speaking on her father’s recovery process, Shakira said it’s “been very hard and slow” but her dad is a,

“wonderful man and an endearing character who surprises us all with his strength.”

The “Waka Waka” artist continued and expressed that her father is the perfect example of resilience.

“He has overcome COVID once, two accidents, one pneumonia and five surgeries— all of this at 91 years of age, in less than six months. My dad is the biggest example of resilience, and my mother has been by his side day and night.”

While her relationship with Gerard didn’t work, Shakira is thankful that her kids have her parents as great examples of love and commitment.

“They have both been a reflection of that dream that didn’t come true for me. But I hope they are role models for my kids of love, of patience in relationships, of absolute devotion and zest for life.”
