Angelica Ross Claims ‘American Horror Story’ Creator Ryan Murphy Ghosted Her After Asking If She Wanted To Help Create A Season Centered Around Black Women

Actress Angelica Ross is not happy with famed show creator Ryan Murphy. 

Angelica Ross came through with receipts after allegedly being ignored by “American Horror Story” executive producer Ryan Murphy. A proposed idea for a season that would be Black-woman-led sits at the center of this brewing conflict. According to Angelica Ross, Ryan Murphy ghosted her on conversations surrounding the potential plot they were working on and, instead, went in a completely different direction for season 11. In a post shared to her X account on Monday (Sept. 18), she said:

“After not hearing back. After sending flowers and no response I sent one last email in Feb 2022 (it took about a year to film season 10 due to COVID) while still contractually in first position with the show.  Mind you, marvel had called twice now. I haven’t heard from him since.  #SAGAFTRAstrike.”

The actress provided emails allegedly between herself and Ryan Murphy that date back to July 2020 to support her claims. According to the emails, Ryan Murphy contacted Ross to get the ball rolling on an “AHS” season that would predominantly feature Black women. Murphy even asked for Ross’ input on the cast for the anthology series. Debbi Morgan, Lynn Whitfield, Viola Davis, Lupita Nyong’o, Halle Berry, and Amiyah Scott were all named during their email exchange.

However, despite Murphy’s initial excitement for the idea, the conversation came to an abrupt end and he allegedly stopped replying to Ross. The “Pose” star shared another email where she seemingly attempted to pick the discourse on the subject back up but to no avail. 

Ross explained that she did not have a problem with the change of plans, but she did take issue with the lack of communication on Murphy’s end. She  shared:

“It’s not JUST that the idea changed.  Things change all the time.  It’s that I called business affairs for MONTHS trying to get clarity if they were picking up my contract option or if I was ok to tell Marvel that I was available for whatever they were calling me for.  I had been auditioning for THREE YEARS for marvel.  It’s that I was HELD in first position the whole time.”

Ross, who is a trans-woman, also said she had to endure transphobia and racism while on set for “AHS.” 

“Will also tell you about the transphobic remarks my co-star said to my face, and the racism I complained about on set that they said was “free speech”. We on strike so you know I got time this week.”

Over on Instagram, Ross shared footage from a SAG-AFTRA Black History panel she was a part of in 2018. In the clip, she praised her former friend Ryan Murphy but also touched on her desire to make “history with Black creators.” 

“Ryan Murhpy, let me tell you y’all I’m so happy cause he hits gold a lot – you know what I’m saying. So I’m happy about that. I’m really really happy about that but I really really would like to also be making history with Black creators.”

Reportedly, a source close to Murphy said that the series often toys with multiple ideas before selecting the final storyline of a season. Murphy has not yet directly addressed Ross’ remarks.

Ross appeared in seasons 9 (“1984”) and 10 (“Double Feature”) of “American Horror Story.” Season 12 is set to start airing episodes on Wednesday (Sept. 20).
