Fat Joe Tried (And Failed) To Get Will Smith To Perform At The Hip-Hop Awards

As host and executive producer of this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards, Fat Joe recently shared one thing he wishes he could’ve made happen.

According to reports, New York rapper Fat Joe attempted to get Will Smith to perform at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards, which is set to honor the genre’s 50th anniversary. During a recent interview ahead of the broadcast, Fat Joe, born Joseph Cartagena, revealed the one regret he has after executive producing the award ceremony. The 53-year-old admitted that he tried to get Will Smith onstage to perform as part of the show’s homage to hip-hop, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

Joe said,

“You know who I didn’t successfully get was Will Smith. I was really trying to get Will Smith to come out and do ‘Summer Time.'”

Despite being invited to take the BET show’s stage to pay tribute, Will Smith, 55, had to decline due to a scheduling conflict. Reportedly, the film star is in the middle of filming his upcoming sequel “Bad Boys” with Martin Lawrence. The “All the Way Up” rapper elaborated,

“But we tried. We try to pull off a miracle if we can. We try to pull a cloud out of the sky.”

Smith’s rap career first gained recognition when he became part of a hip-hop duo with DJ Jazzy Jeff in the ‘80s. Smith achieved fame as a rapper under the name The Fresh Prince and received four Grammy Awards for his rap performances.
