Dave East, real name David Brewster Jr., 35, stated on the matter:

“I had a lean addiction for maybe like 3 years…You know what started to f*ck with me, the cramps…I had a doctor explain this to me, it dries your intestines up…it dehydrates your body.”

He continued:

“That used to scare me cause I could be chilling, sipping, go to sleep – and wake up with the sh*t that’ll put me on the floor…get out the bed and be balled up…real pain. And I went through that getting off the sh*t, so in my mind while that was happening…[I] go ‘if this is the pain I’mma feel every time I don’t got this sh*t, I can’t f*ck with this sh*t.”

The rapper went on to compare lean to the narcotic dope, further explaining that once you consume it to a certain point, your body begins to feel like it needs it. East also shared when asked that most of his friends and loved ones “hated” the habit, and revealed that he actually lost one of his close friends who also abused the substance, adding that his death “scared” him while reflecting on what would’ve become of himself if he continued to sip the drink.

Later in the conversation, East also expressed how not being able to properly care for his first daughter, Kairi Chanel Brewster, 6, also helped his decision to quit. The rapper explained that not only was he facing the possibility of losing his life and no longer being present for her, but he also understood she not in the best care with him in that intoxicated state. He added:

“I’m falling asleep, I’m supposed to be watching her. Her mom…she might be like ‘yo I gotta run in the store real quick, wake up, watch her’…and Kairi wide awake and I’m nodding…I don’t know what she doing…that started to scare me,”

East now has a second daughter Kobi Chanai Brewster, 2, who is certain to have kept him from relapsing to his addiction as well.
