Michael Jackson Biopic Starring His Nephew Jaafar Jackson Set To Hit Theaters Spring 2025

A theatrical movie about the life of late pop icon Michael Jackson officially got a release date!

According to reports, the film – which stars his nephew Jaafar Jackson – will make its way to the big screen on April 18th, 2025.

As we first covered nearly a year ago, the project, titled Michael, was confirmed by Lionsgate and will be directed by Antoine Fuqua, notable for his work on blockbuster hits such as the “Equalizer” trilogy, “Training Day,” and “Emancipation.” The script for the film was reportedly written by screenwriter John Logan, known for his work on films such as “Gladiator,” Rango, and “Hugo.” Co-producing the movie are Michael Jackson’s estate executors John Branca and John McClain alongside Graham King – the visionary behind the award-winning biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The critically acclaimed 2018 movie chronicled the life of rock sensation Queen and their lead singer Freddie Mercury.

Reportedly, the production was finally given a release date following the end of the Hollywood strikes. Production shutdowns reportedly stalled the project for the past year. The movie will cover the 13x Grammy Award winner’s life and rise to becoming one of the biggest pop artists of all time.

In case you’re unfamiliar, Jackson’s artistry significantly influenced music and music videos during and long after the height of his stardom. Being widely dubbed, the King of Pop, the Indiana native is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, selling over 400 million records worldwide.

Additionally, his accolades – on top of his many Recording Academy trophies – include 13 Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles and inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2x), the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Dance Hall of Fame (the only recording artist to do so) as well as the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame. On the heels of his farewell tour “This Is It” back in 2009, Jackson tragically passed away after going into cardiac arrest.

Now, fans will get to relive some of his magic with the upcoming movie. At this time, Jaafar, 27, hasn’t said anything further about portraying his uncle in the film. When news of his casting was first revealed, the son of Michael’s brother Jermaine Jackson shared a picture of himself in one of the pop star’s iconic outfits, writing:

“I’m humbled and honored to bring my Uncle Michael’s story to life. To all the fans all over the world, I’ll see you soon.”

A synopsis of the movie reads:

“‘Michael’ will bring audiences a riveting and honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated man who became the King of Pop. The film presents his triumphs and tragedies on an epic, cinematic scale — from his human side and personal struggles to his undeniable creative genius, exemplified by his most iconic performances. As never before, audiences will experience an inside look into one of the most influential, trailblazing artists the world has ever known.”
