SZA Reacts To Losing Album Of The Year Grammy: ‘I’m Grateful I Won Three’
SZA is “grateful” despite not winning the coveted Album of the Year award at the Grammys on Sunday night.
The songstress was bested by Taylor Swift, who won for her album “Midnights.” Still, SZA went home with three other awards at music’s biggest night: Best R&B Song for “Snooze,” Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Ghost in the Machine,” with Phoebe Bridgers, and Best Progressive R&B Album for “SOS.”
SZA, who had a total of nine nominations (the most nods of any artist this year), says, “I don’t actually” have any feelings about not winning Album of the Year.
“I’m grateful I won three. I could have left with nothing and I didn’t, and I’m grateful. My parents got to see it and I didn’t bomb on live television, and that was so scary. And I faced some really big fears and I’m just happy that it all went well, genuinely. And I’m happy for everybody.”
While SZA was in good spirits over the award, Jay-Z took a much more vocal stance while accepting the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award during the event. Sharing his thoughts on Beyoncé never winning Album of the Year, despite having the most Grammy awards ever, he said,
“I don’t want to embarrass this young lady but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won album of the year. So even by your own metrics that doesn’t work. Think about that. The most Grammys, never won Album of the Year, that doesn’t work.”

Beyoncé’s father Mathew Knowles also sounded off and pointed the finger at Columbia Records for the snub.
“People don’t know the process. Your record label can only appoint one person in a category. That means her record label, I’m gonna call you out Columbia Records … has never put her in that category for consideration.”
He also addressed Adele’s “25” album winning the award over Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” in 2017.
“There’s a financial reason, maybe Adele sold more records worldwide. I don’t know these answers, but these are some of the thought processes they go through. Maybe you say ‘Beyoncé has her success, let’s push Adele’s. It’s a combination of all, but it starts with the label.”
