Selena Gomez Says She Needed To Hit ‘Rock Bottom’ In Order To Overcome Her Mental Health Struggles: ‘I’m In A Much Better Place Now’
Selena Gomez is opening up about reaching her lowest point while struggling with her mental health.
Recently the singer and actress participated in a panel discussion called “Mindfulness Over Perfection: Getting Real About Mental Health” at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. During the event, the 31-year-old candidly discussed her emotions as she and attendees viewed footage from her 2022 documentary, “My Mind and Me.”

Filmed over a span of six years, the documentary delves into the pop star’s mental health challenges, addressing her experiences with burnout, psychotic episodes, and suicide attempts, which ultimately led to her diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
During the discussion, Selena Gomez revealed how she feels whenever she reflects on the difficulties she previously faced. She shared,
“It makes me sick to hear the things that I was saying about myself in the beginning. It bums me out.”
Selena also made it known that she was not without support throughout those trying times, saying,
“There was a lot of people that cared about me more than I cared about myself that really wanted me to do things I wasn’t ready for.”
However, she stated that she had to have her “rock bottom” moment before getting her life back on track.

The former Disney star confessed that when filming for her documentary initially started, she was unaware that self-care was essential for one’s well-being.
She stated,
“It’s important to speak to yourself with kindness, but I don’t think I really understood that.”
Much to the relief of her family, friends, and adoring fans, Selena persevered, and while concluding her statements on this subject matter, she said,
“It took a couple of tries, but I like to think and hope I’m in a much better place now.”

It has been well-documented that Selena has struggled with self-confidence and the challenges of show business in the past. During her years working as a child actor, she reportedly did not always feel like she fit in.
Additionally, Selena was, at one point, romantically linked with music superstar Justin Bieber. Their relationship lasted from 2010 to 2018 before they ultimately ended things for good. She has also spoken publicly about the heartbreak that followed their separation.
