Kandi Burruss Reveals Her Destiny’s Child & TLC Hits Were Inspired By A Previous Relationship
Kandi Burruss, renowned songwriter and former cast member of Real Housewives of Atlanta, has opened up about the inspirations behind two iconic hits she penned for Destiny’s Child and TLC.
In a recent interview, Kandi Burruss, 48, shared insights into her creative process and the personal experiences that fueled the lyrics of Bills Bills Bills and No Scrubs (both released in 1999).
The songwriter revealed that both songs were inspired by a particular man from her past, who she claimed has undergone significant personal success since then.
She explained,
“Well, the guy who kind of inspired some of those songs for me, he ended up becoming really successful later. At the time, back then [it] was kind of like, ‘Hmm, OK, guy, you need to get it together.’ But he ended up being successful in his own right, which I knew he had it in him.”
Although Kandi Burruss did not disclose the man’s identity, she acknowledged that he is aware of the songs written about his alleged behavior:
“I think he said something to me once, but I never confirmed it for him, but I mean, hey, at the end of the day, he’s doing great now.”
One man from Kandi’s past who didn’t always make good on his financial responsibilities is the father of her now 22-year-old daughter, Riley Burruss.

Russell “Big Block” Spencer, Kandi Burruss
During season 13 of RHOA, Kandi Burruss pursued back child support from Russell “Block” Spencer, a major storyline that garnered lots of attention and discussion from viewers.
In March 2022, Block claimed that the child support was fully paid off and that he was on good terms with Kandi and Riley Burruss.
Regarding her relationship with the artists she wrote for, Burruss mentioned occasional encounters with Beyoncé and other Destiny’s Child members over the years. She said,
“I’ve seen them on and off throughout the years. We didn’t really keep in touch calling each other on the phone or anything. I have run into [Beyoncé] a couple times, come to different events, [going to her] concert, seeing her backstage and stuff like that. But Kelly [Rowland], I’ve seen her probably a lot more than everybody else and LeToya Luckett, we still communicate.”
