Rapper Sauce Walka Explains Why He Called Out Drake For Cultural Appropriation, Says He Doesn’t Collaborate w/ Houston Artists
Sauce Walka’s latest comments have stirred up a storm of reactions, as he challenges Drake’s authenticity in supporting Houston’s music scene.
On a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, Houston rapper Sauce Walka explained why he called out Drake for cultural appropriation. He argued that Drake has benefited from Houston’s culture without adequately supporting or collaborating with Houston artists.

When Charlamagne tha God pointed out that Sauce Walka had criticized Drake for cultural appropriation before Kendrick Lamar did, Sauce Walka responded,
“I definitely did, and if my whole city would’ve supported what I was on back then for the reason that I did, we would’ve got the same reaction that Kendrick Lamar and California did.”
Sauce Walka is referencing the overwhelming support Kendrick Lamar has garnered in his rap battle against Drake, particularly with Lamar’s hit song Not Like Us, which topped the charts as the #1 song in the country and was widely celebrated as the summer anthem of 2024.

Drake, Kendrick Lamar
On how Los Angeles and California as a whole backed Kendrick Lamar, Sauce Walka continued,
“I think it’s just a beautiful thing to see the outcome of an entire city, an entire state, stand with an artist that represents them and represents the culture and is trying to defend the culture. That’s the difference between appreciation and appropriation, and that’s what creates opportunity for that city.”
Charlamagne tha God also noted that without Houston, Drake might not be where he is today. In response, Sauce Walka questioned,
“Why did Drake not have a bunch of records with Houston artists? He was doing that with Atlanta … It’s a long list of artists from the Bay all the way to LA who have songs with Drake. How does Drake love Houston so much at that time and not have music with artists that you’re uplifting from this community?”

He added,
“F*** me, I don’t care. It’s bigger than me. Travis Scott is the only rapper who still has a song with Drake.”
Social media has erupted with mixed reactions to Sauce Walka’s statements.
One X user defended Drake, saying,
“I’m from Houston: Drake has records with Trae Tha Truth, Bun B, Beyoncé, Travis Scott, and Slim Thug is on the ‘Say Something’ remix, a classic. And Drake had ‘Houston Appreciation Weekend’ every summer for years. He also owns a home here. We love Drake. Relax.”

Meanwhile, another X user supported Sauce Walka’s view, stating,
“Agreed, Drake is an opportunist, period.”
