In her announcement, Nyong’o explained her motivation behind creating the podcast and elaborated on its intended audience. She shared that Mind Your Own is for anyone who has ever felt out of place or struggled with a sense of belonging:
“I created MIND YOUR OWN because I was homesick and I wanted to hear stories from other Africans navigating more than one world that they consider home like me. It’s also for anybody who has ever felt alien in one way or another; for everyone considering what it really means to belong.”

The podcast will explore themes of home and identity, drawing from Nyong’o’s diverse experiences spanning Kenya, Mexico, and the United States. Each episode will also highlight personal stories from Africans in cities like Nairobi, Johannesburg, and Los Angeles, offering a rich tapestry of cultural experiences.
Nyong’o emphasized to media outlets the importance of authentic African voices while promoting the project, stating:
“It is deeply important to me that honest and authentic stories about the African experience are made widely available to all. This podcast is close to my heart, reflecting both my personal connection to these narratives and the work of the talented team of African voices, composers, and editors who brought them to life.”

Mind Your Own will debut with two episodes on September 19th, followed by new episodes released weekly on all podcast platforms.
