UPDATE: FAA Bans Flights To Haiti For 30 Days After Planes Struck w/ Gunfire
Update: The FAA has officially banned flights to Haiti for 30 days after multiple planes were struck with gunfire. U.S. flights also cannot fly under 10,000 feet in Haiti’s airspace, according to multiple reports. The FAA released a Notice to Airmen (NOA) on Tuesday, November 12.
Original Story: This is horrifying! A Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale to Haiti was diverted after being struck by gunfire four times while attempting to land in Port-au-Prince.
The plane was rerouted to the Dominican Republic. On Monday, a JetBlue flight from Haiti to New York was also hit by a bullet, the airline confirmed.
According to ABC News, The FAA stated that two additional flights to Toussaint Louverture Airport were diverted “as a precaution,” and the airport is now closed. The FAA is considering suspending all flights to Haiti and will announce a decision soon.
