20-Year-Old Woman In Critical Condition After Being Set On Fire While Walking To Dollar General, Family Looking For Answers

Tragic news out of North Carolina. ?

A 20-year-old woman is in critical but stable condition after being set on fire in Sanford, N.C., while walking toward a local Dollar General.

Authorities say that on Dec. 16, Ashanti Downey was rushed to the hospital with severe burns after an individual approached her from behind, poured a flammable liquid on her, and set her on fire with a cigarette while she was walking along Highway 27.

Downey’s mother, Donecia Davis, is heartbroken and seeking justice, emotionally telling reporters:

“How could they do this to my baby?… You didn’t have to do this to her.”

The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the case and is currently searching for at least three suspects. Authorities believe the incident could be tied to domestic issues or even a gang initiation. They are urging anyone with information to come forward. A GoFundMe has been created to help with Downey’s medical expenses.

Our prayers are with the Downey and Davis families during this time.
