Bernice King—the youngest child of civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King—also shared a post dedicated to Trayvon, sharing an image of him and writing:
“Trayvon Martin. He should be turning 30 today. 30. He should have 3 decades behind him and be planning for more. My heart goes out to his parents and family.”
As you may know, Trayvon was just 17 years old when he was fatally shot on February 26, 2012, by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman reported Martin as a “suspicious person” to the police and, despite being advised not to pursue him, followed the teen.
An altercation ensued, during which Zimmerman shot the unarmed minor. Zimmerman claimed self-defense and was later acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges.

The incident sparked national debates about racial profiling and self-defense laws, leading to widespread protests and discussions on systemic racism in the United States.
Trayvon’s life, along with those of countless other young Black males who have been unjustifiably slain, continues to serve as a catalyst for justice reform and advocacy for marginalized Black Americans.
