Jermaine Dupri Says Mariah Carey Was Inspired by Wu-Tang Clan & Xscape While Making “Always Be My Baby” [VIDEO]

Jermaine Dupri is opening up about the moment Mariah Carey challenged his expectations in the studio.

While on the RNB Money podcast, Jermaine shared that the first time he worked with Mariah, she told him she wanted to sing over C.R.E.A.M by Wu Tang Clan. He admitted he was initially shocked that she was drawn to “ghetto” beats but quickly realized she had a clear vision for her sound.

Jermaine recalled following Mariah’s lead as she made it clear she wanted something with the vibe of Just Kickin’ It by Xscape, something hard but still

“pretty.”

That session ended up birthing Always Be My Baby, which went on to become a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
