Tina Knowles Recalls How Slowly Beyoncé & Jay-Z Moved When They First Started Dating
Ms. Tina Knowles is spilling a little tea on her daughter’s love life, and it turns out Beyoncé and Jay-Z were anything but rushed when they first started dating.
In a newly aired sit-down with Oprah Winfrey, Ms. Tina revealed that it actually took a while for things to heat up between the power couple—even after their iconic 2003 collab, Crazy in Love.
Oprah and Tina discussed the creation of Beyoncé’s debut album, recalling the widespread skepticism it faced. Determined to ensure its success, Ms. Tina explained that Beyoncé secured a feature from Jay-Z.

When Oprah asked if Tina then watched their relationship “blossom” from that moment on, Ms. Tina shared:
“Not from the beginning, because they talked for like a year on the phone. And I was like, ‘Oh God, I don’t ever remember talking to somebody for a year on the phone—this is moving really slow.’”
She added:
“It took them a year to really get together…When she went to do a movie in L.A., I think that was the first time [they got close]. He had been to our house for dinner, but they weren’t dating then… they moved pretty slow.”
While the exact moment they became official is still unclear, it’s widely reported that Bey and Jay sparked a romance in the early 2000s. They later tied the knot in 2008 and are now proud parents of three.
Are you moving slow like Beyoncé and Jay-Z when it comes to love? Or are you diving right in?
