Former News Anchor Leon Harris Opens Up About The Broadcast That Cost Him His Job: ‘I Was Drinking Between Shows’
Leon Harris is breaking his silence about the on-air moment that cost him his job at NBC4.
The longtime anchor concerned viewers during a Thanksgiving broadcast when he appeared to slur his words and stumble through the script. Now, in an interview on the Call Me Friend podcast, Harris explained what really happened that day.
“I ended up drinking between shows, and I went on the air,” he admitted. “I was more affected than I thought I was. Even at the time, I felt like I was perfectly fine.”

Harris, who was open about his drinking struggles in the past, said viewers began calling the station, concerned he was having a medical emergency:
“People were calling. They were thinking that I was having a stroke. It was the most embarrassing thing that has ever, ever happened to me.”
He continued,
“Having that job and having the status and the responsibilities that came with it, actually may have been part of the reason I was drinking.”
The incident led to Harris being pulled off the air, and he eventually stepped away from the station to focus on his health and family.
