Suspected United Healthcare CEO Killer Luigi Mangione Allegedly Wrote In Diary About ‘Targeted’ Attack To Avoid ‘Risking Innocents,’ Prosecutors Say
Luigi Mangione, currently on trial for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, allegedly kept a diary where he laid out plans for what prosecutors say was a calculated and premeditated attack.
According to reports, prosecutors have revealed a red notebook allegedly recovered during Luigi’s arrest, which they say contains chilling entries that detail his reasoning and methods for targeting Thompson. The journal was submitted in a new court filing as part of an effort to justify a terrorism enhancement added to Luigi’s first-degree murder charge.

In one entry dated August 2024, Luigi allegedly wrote:
“So say you want to rebel against the deadly, greed-fueled health insurance cartel. Do you bmb the HQ? No. Bmbs = terrorism.”
He continued:
“Such actions appear the unjustified anger of someone who simply got sick/had bad luck and took their frustration out on the insurance industry, while recklessly endangering countless employees.”

In a later entry from October, Luigi allegedly argued that some should instead “wack [sic] the CEO at the annual parasitic bean-counter convention,” adding:
“It’s targeted, precise, and doesn’t risk innocents. Most importantly, the point is self-evident… The point is made in the news headline: ‘Insurance CEO killed at annual investors conference.’”

Brian Thompson was killed in December 2024, moments before a high-profile healthcare investors conference. Luigi was arrested five days later.
Prosecutors say the entries show a clear intent to carry out a politically motivated act of violence against a corporate figurehead, justifying the added terrorism charge. Luigi has pleaded not guilty to all state and federal charges against him.
