Grammy Awards Add New Categories For Best Album Cover & Best Traditional Country Album + Updates Best New Artist Eligibility
The Grammy Awards are gearing up for their 2026 ceremony and have announced a slew of updates for next year’s show.
While several changes were made following the Recording Academy’s annual board meeting, one of the most notable was the addition of a new category, Best Album Cover, a move that has reportedly been long championed by artists and industry members alike.
There was also a significant shift in the country genre. The former Best Country Album category has been renamed Best Contemporary Country Album, and a new category, Best Traditional Country Album, has been added. While no official reason was given for the change, many speculate it’s a response to the controversy surrounding Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter win in the category earlier this year.

In the Best New Artist category, the Recording Academy amended its rules to allow artists featured on any Album of the Year nominee to now be eligible, provided their contributions fall below the 20% playing time threshold. Previously, such artists were automatically disqualified.
Additional updates were made in the classical genre and packaging field, along with minor revisions to definitions, eligibility, and criteria across multiple categories.
What are your thoughts on the Grammy Award updates? Are you looking forward to the show?
