R. Kelly Seeks Presidential Pardon From Donald Trump After Claiming Prison Officials Plotted To Kill Him
R.Kelly is turning to Donald Trump.
The singer is currently serving a 30-year sentence on federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges, but according to his legal team, he’s now seeking a pardon or sentence commutation from Trump.
Kelly’s attorney, Beau B. Brindley, shared with PEOPLE:
“We are in open discussions with people close to President Trump. Those discussions have expanded and intensified since we filed our motion. We believe that President Trump is the only person with the courage to help us.”

Brindley also said Kelly is being punished for filing an emergency motion for immediate release from federal custody, alleging that prison officials plotted to have him killed:
“Immediately after our motion became public, Robert was thrown into solitary confinement. He cannot make phone calls to his family. He has no access to commissary. He has spiders crawling over him while he tries to sleep.”
He continued:
“He is not safe in federal custody, and to keep him in prison while he is under threat like this is cruel and unusual punishment.”
