Grammy Awards Face Backlash After Adding Best Traditional Country Album Category Following Beyoncé’s Best Country Album Win: ‘Moving The Goalpost’
The Grammys recently announced a new country category ahead of their 2026 award show, and the public has a lot to say.

Just a day after the Recording Academy revealed that the Best Country Album category would be renamed Best Contemporary Country Album, and that a new category, Best Traditional Country Album, would be added, many are calling out the move as subtly racist.
Critics note that the timing feels suspect, coming only months after Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter sparked debate and ultimately won Best Country Album. Many are speculating that the significant change was made to appease country traditionalists who were upset over her victory.
If you recall, Cowboy Carter stirred up plenty of controversy within the country music community, as people debated whether the album truly fit the genre. Despite its strong country roots and themes, Beyoncé was completely shut out of last year’s CMA nominations.
Now, the Recording Academy is facing backlash, with many accusing them of “moving the goalpost” to keep minority artists out of the main country category. Critics argue that creating a separate “Traditional” category is a way to divide and gatekeep the genre.
What’s your take on the situation? Are the Grammys trying to course-correct or exclude?
