Philadelphia Workers Reach Deal w/ City, Ending Strike That Halted Trash Pickup
Philadelphia city workers are headed back to work.
Members of AFSCME District Council 33 reached a tentative agreement with the city just after 4 a.m. on Wednesday (July 9), ending a strike that brought residential trash pickup to a stop. The new deal includes a 9% wage increase over a three-year period.

Union leaders originally asked for a 24% raise before lowering their demand to 15%, which brought them closer to the 8.75% increase proposed by Mayor Cherelle Parker. When combined with a separate 5% raise from a one-year extension agreed to last fall, union members will see a total 14% increase over Parker’s four-year term.
The contract still needs to be ratified by union members, but city workers are expected to begin returning to their jobs today (July 9).
