Akon’s Multi-Billion Dollar City In Senegal Scrapped & Replaced w/ Resort
Akon futuristic city in Senegal is no longer.
The singer’s $6 billion plan for “Akon City” has been scrapped after years of stalled progress and missed deadlines. “That project no longer exists,” said Serigne Mamadou Mboup, head of Sapco-Senegal, the state-run agency overseeing the development zone.
Originally pitched as a real-life Wakanda, Akon City failed to materialize beyond a basketball court, a youth center, and an info booth. Last year, Sapco gave Akon a two-week deadline to begin construction or risk losing the land in Mbodiène. Most of it has since been reclaimed by the state after missed payments.
Now, Senegal is moving forward with a scaled-down $1.2 billion tourism hub. The plan includes hotels, apartments, a marina, and a lagoon promenade.
While Akon has lost most of the 136 acres granted to him in 2020, he’s reportedly retained about 20 acres for a “realistic project,” which Sapco says it will support.
