Airbnb Apologizes, Issues Full Refund After Host Allegedly Uses Fake AI Photos To Accuse Guest Of Nearly 16K In Damages
A woman is calling out Airbnb after the platform initially sided with a host who she says used fake, AI-generated photos to falsely accuse her of causing thousands of dollars in damages.
The guest, a London-based academic, had booked a Manhattan, New York apartment for over two months but chose to leave early due to safety concerns. Shortly after, the host claimed she had caused £12,000 (approximately $15,965) worth of damages to the property. The host even submitted photos, including a cracked coffee table and a urine-stained mattress, along with allegations that the woman had broken several appliances.

Airbnb initially sided with the host and demanded the guest pay over £5,000 (around $6,641). However, after she appealed and pointed out discrepancies in the images, and a publication reached out to the company for questioning, Airbnb ultimately refunded her the full booking cost (nearly $5,000) and removed a negative review the host had left on her profile.
Speaking on the matter, the guest stated: “These inconsistencies are simply not possible in genuine, unedited photographs… Airbnb not only failed to identify this obvious manipulation, they entirely ignored my explanations.”
Airbnb later apologized, launched an internal review, and confirmed the host, who held “superhost” status, had been formally warned and would be removed from the platform if it happened again.
The incident has sparked concern over how easily AI tools can now be used to fake evidence, with experts warning that platforms like Airbnb need stronger fraud detection systems.
