The incident occurred before 11 a.m. near the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area. The base, which is home to the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division and thousands of soldiers and families, urged personnel to shelter in place during the lockdown.
Three on-base elementary schools and several nearby off-base schools also went into lockdown “out of an abundance of caution,” impacting nearly 1,400 students. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter confirmed they are monitoring the situation closely but have not yet shared any further updates.
