Family Of Georgia Woman Who Gave Birth While Brain Dead Shares Update: ‘It’s Not Getting Any Better’
Adriana Smith’s family is opening up about her newborn son, Chance.
Adriana was pronounced brain de@d earlier this year and kept on life support from February to June to deliver her baby.
Her mother, April Newkirk, said her grandson is still fighting for his life: “His weight is gradually picking up, but the breathing is what we’re concerned with. So, he’s making a little bit of progress, but still some things to do.”
The family hopes Chance will be able to leave the hospital by late September or October.

Newkirk said the grief is still heavy for the family: “It’s hard because something’s been taken away from us, it’s hard. You know, I think about her every day, all the time. It’s not getting any better day by day.”
Newkirk has become an advocate, speaking with lawmakers to call for changes to Georgia’s LIFE Act, which she says forced doctors to keep her daughter on life support while pregnant: “I want them to know that this didn’t have to happen. I want them to know that the law needs to be changed. It doesn’t need to be altered. It doesn’t need to be in effect at all. Women have rights; it’s their body.”
