Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Signs Executive Order Establishing ‘ICE-Free Zones’ Throughout City
#Chicago is stepping up protections for its residents amid heightened federal enforcement efforts.
Mayor Brandon Johnson has signed an executive order prohibiting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (#ICE) agents from using city-owned property for staging, processing, or enforcement operations. “That means city property and unwilling private businesses will no longer serve as grounds for these raids,” he said.
It also instructs city departments to put the new rules in place within five days and requires employees to report any violations immediately. The move comes as President #Trump’s administration has launched Operation Midway Blitz, a sweeping ICE crackdown targeting undocumented immigrants in Chicago. It also follows reports of Black Chicago residents being detained by ICE.
The Department of Homeland Security (#DHS) recently said that ICE has arrested over 1,000 people since its Chicago operation kicked off. Local advocates are also pushing back against the crackdown by distributing “Know Your Rights” materials.
