[UPDATE]Former Illinois Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson Admits Making Terrible Decisions’ As He’s Sentenced To 20 Years For M#rder Of Sonya Massey
Former Illinois sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson was sentencedtoday (Jan. 29) to 20 years in prison for the fatal sh**ting of #SonyaMassey, a Black mother of two who called 911 for help in 2024.
Grayson, 31, had been convicted of second?degree m*rder in October 2025. During the sentencing, Grayson apologized and said, “I made terrible decisions that night. I’m sorry.” He added, “I was very unprofessional…She didn’t deserve to be yelled and cussed at and called names. Nobody deserves that.”
The sh**ting happened in the early morning hours of July 6, 2024, after Massey, who was struggling with mental health issues, dialed 911, fearing a prowler outside her home. Grayson and another deputy searched the yard and found nothing before entering her house. Body?camera footage showed an exchange over a pot of hot water on the stove that escalated quickly, culminating in Massey telling officers, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus,” shortly before Grayson drew his firearm and sh*t her in the face. Grayson later testified he feared she would throw the pot of water at him.
Grayson was initially charged with three counts of first-degree m*rder, but a jury convicted him of the lesser charge of second-degree m*rder. Massey’s family and civil rights advocates expressed frustration that a first-degree conviction wasn’t secured, and Massey’s daughter said after the sentencing that “twenty years is not enough.” The case prompted national outrage, a $10 million settlement for Massey’s relatives, and a U.S. Justice Department inquiry that led to changes in law enforcement hiring and training policies in #Illinois.
