Condolences: Houston Hip-Hop Pioneer Michael “5000” Watts Has Passed Away
The Swishahouse Records community is grieving the loss of Michael “5000” Watts, a towering force behind Houston’s hip-hop identity and the evolution of Southern rap culture.
In a statement released Friday evening, the family said Watts had developed Torsades de Pointes, a fatal heart rhythm. “It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we inform the public of our beloved Michael ‘5000’ Watts,” a statement from Watts’ family said. “We truly appreciate the love shown to Michael throughout his career and we ask for continued prayers as we navigate through this very hard journey.”
According to the statement, Watts was more than a music executive — “he was a movement.” As the driving force behind Swishahouse, he helped carry the chopped and screwed sound from local neighborhoods to global audiences, transforming mixtape culture into an international engine for independent artistry.
He is remembered not only for breaking artists and shaping sounds, but for mentorship, creative ownership and building opportunity that stretched far beyond music into culture, business and identity.
Prayers up for his fans and loved one during this difficult time.
