‘Experiencing Death Alive’ + Calls It One of Life’s ‘Greatest Pains’

A candid conversation about heartbreak and growth has Jeannie Mai opening up about one of the most painful chapters of her life.

Jeannie Mai is reflecting on the emotional weight of her divorce from Jeezy, describing the experience in stark, unfiltered terms. During the Thursday, January 29 episode of iHeartRadio’s “Question Everything with Danielle Robay,” Mai didn’t shy away from the reality of the split. “It’s one of the greatest pains that any human has to endure, honestly,” she said. “Divorce is just—it’s experiencing death alive.”

Jeezy, born Jay Wayne Jenkins, filed for divorce in September 2023 after two years of marriage. While the end of the relationship was devastating, Mai explained that it also reshaped her outlook on love and healing.

You never wish to corrupt something that’s so planned and intended to be forever,” she shared, adding that she still cherishes the memories they built together, including welcoming their daughter, Monaco, in January 2022.

Now 47, Mai says regret isn’t part of her story.

I’m never gonna regret that I got married because I’m so thankful to have experienced love in so many different ways,” she said. “Now I just have to—instead of experiencing love, because I’ve got that down—I have to define what healthy love looks like for me.”

Mai also expressed relief that her daughter was so young during the separation.

“I am so lucky that Monaco was only 1 when this happened,” she said. “She’s not gonna remember what that turmoil is like… My job is to define peace for her.”

As she moves forward, Mai says prioritizing her health has become essential. “Working out is No. 1,” she previously told Parade. “Health as well. That’s my No. 1 priority right now, taking care of myself.”
