Sherri Shepherd Makes History As First Woman To Play Genie In Broadway’s ‘Aladdin’: ‘Wishes Do Come True!’

Sherri Shepherd is headed to Broadway — and she’s making history in the process.

The comedian, actress and daytime talk show host announced that she is joining Disney’s “Aladdin” for a limited run as the Genie, becoming the first woman to play the role in the Broadway production. Celebrating the news, Shepherd wrote, “Well…THE SECRET IS OUT! I’ve got a whole new kind of magic up my sleeve!

She continued, “I’m beyond excited, honored, and ready to rub the lamp and make some Broadway magic as the first woman to ever play the genie in Disney’s ALADDIN!” Shepherd then joked, “That’s right… GENIE, BABY! Wishes do come true!”

The new role marks another major career milestone for Shepherd, whose résumé spans stand-up comedy, television, film and daytime TV. Reflecting on her journey, she wrote, “From comedy clubs to film & tv screens, to talk shows to the Broadway stage… what a journey!” She added, “I cannot wait to bring my own brand of joy, laughter, BIG personality and a little bit of sass to this role.

Shepherd wrapped up her announcement with another playful nod to the Disney musical, writing, “Now… somebody tell me where I can get a magic carpet!”
