Maxwell Lashes Out At Critics Saying He Prefers White Women: ‘Go F*** YourSelf!’
A few women of color are feeling some type of way these days, about some of singer Maxwell’s Instagram pictures. Specifically, his lack of diversity. In short, they feel that he rarely shows African American women. This week, the photo below triggered a nasty Instagram exchange.

Leave it to me to be anti-politically correct. Maxwell does prefer non-black women. Sorry it’s the truth—I haven’t seen any black women in his videos since the earlier part of his career. Just own it, and do you Maxwell. Personally I don’t give a lot of energy to it because I don’t want anybody that don’t want me.

The heartache and bitterness in your heart is so powerful! You DO NOT KNOW Maxwell in any capacity accept for what you see in the gossip rags. Mor e importantly, Max had 3–THREE–beautiful black women in his latest music videos for BLACKsummersnight. I have always said and will always stand by the belief that if a man can write something like Luxury: Cococure, then he definitely has an appreciation for brown skin. However, let’s be clear now, Max is of mixed blood. HE’S NOT AN AFRICAN AMERICAN so really why do you feel he owes anyone anything, but the special woman in his life and himself to be happy.
It absolutely baffles me that I can be 21 years old, a new fan compared to most and have enough sense to know that things are almost never what it seems. You’ve built your entire self worth and sense of beauty on one man to many men, rather than finding love from within. I am a black woman and like I said before, at the age of 21, I witness the men in my generation date more women outside of their race than inside of their race. I have been able to recognize that a lot of these men do indeed date outside of their race for an ego boost, and more importantly for far too long BLACK WOMEN have allowed men to debase their special beauty–settling to be baby mamas, sideline chicks, and glorified hoes in the videos–instead of carrying themselves like a rare, almost unattainable jewel waiting to be found, captured, and cherished. I don’t know Maxwell, and am simply a fan of his music but I decided a long time ago that I would never base my self worth falsely on the personal dealings of another person. Instead of feeling threatened and allowing the essence of you be wounded when you hear rumors of a “black” men dating another woman, think I can and I WILL be that special woman because I too–am not just a beautiful black woman–but a beautiful woman in general. I tell myself that all the time, and can truly careless if a man has an identity complex with what is beautiful in a woman in terms of race, because I could turn a TIGER WOODS if I wanted hahaha! But honestly, Maxwell has always exemplified a beautiful appreciation for a woman’s beauty, and he is the creation of mixed love. He owes you nothing but staying true to those things.
By the way his name is Gerald Maxwell Rivera. He probably doesn’t consider himself African American. Food for thought.

I can take or leave Maxwell, but I think that a lot of black women have a problem with him because he builT much of his fanbase from that earlier “Honey dew sugar chocolate dumpling… sista with a certain sumpthin sumptin” rhetoric. I am very surprised at this…Maxwell used to have the biggest crush on Southern Hummingbird-Tweet. She is one of many he harassed. There were a few, as recently as Rihanna. Rih isn’t the darkest of the sisters, but I see him liking variety of exoticism. But it’s whatever. Beauty is beauty no matter what the shade; it’s all in the preference and level of taste. Mine have changed over the years…I am even finding some Asian men handsome.
Maxwell is Puerto Rican and Haitian, so maybe he only considers biracial and not black as many others like Shemar Moore.
