Larry Wilmore’s ‘Nightly Show’ Canceled, Find Out Why
It’s a wrap for Larry Wilmore’s Comedy Central series The Nightly Show. This week, news hit that the half-hour late-night panel show had come to an end. The last episode will air Thursday.
Comedy Central president Kent Alterman explained as to why the show was axed,
Unfortunately, it hasn’t connected with our audience in ways that we need it to both in the linear channel and in terms of multiplatform outlets and with shareable content and on social platforms as well.
He added,
We just didn’t feel like we had enough traction to sign up for another year. It wasn’t about the election — it’s about another year of the show. Sadly, we’ve been hoping against hope that it would start to resonate in any of those quarters and we just weren’t seeing evidence of it. As much as we like Larry and the uniqueness of the show and the voices that are on the show — not just in terms of ratings — it hasn’t resonated in terms of our fans engaging with the show with consuming or sharing content or having a dialogue about it on social platforms.
Wilmore shared his disappointment, stating:
I’m really grateful to Comedy Central, Jon Stewart, and our fans to have had this opportunity. But I’m also saddened and surprised we won’t be covering this crazy election or ‘The Unblackening’ as we’ve coined it. And keeping it 100, I guess I hadn’t counted on ‘The Unblackening’ happening to my time slot as well.
The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore was a spin-off of The Daily Show, which featured Wilmore as a recurring contributor. It premiered on January 19, 2015 on Comedy Central. It served as a replacement for The Colbert Report, which aired in the same time-slot from October 2005 until December 2014.
The show has been described as a combination of The Daily Show and Politically Incorrect. It features Wilmore’s scripted take on the news, followed by a panel discussion and later in most episodes a game with his guests. The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore has received a generally positive reception from critics, but ratings have fallen since Jon Stewart left The Daily Show.

he was too trill. They don’t want the truth to be televised.. no longer watching comedy central..
They don’t like black people having too much opinion, duh. They want you to report the news, not have an opinion on what’s going on.
I loved this show- the commentary- comedians are timely, original ,funny! A 1 hour show each night would be wonderful.
