Singer Joe Thomas: The state of R&B Has Become Hip-Hop (EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW)
Singer Joe Thomas has been in the R&B game for over 20 years. After releasing his latest album ‘#MYNAMEISJOETHOMAS”, the 43-year-old has decided to retire from the music game. Recently, theJasmineBRAND.com correspondent @SmithWorldWide caught up with the singer during a taping of TV One’s Versus and Flow to talk the legacy that Tupac left behind, where he believe the state of R&B is today and who are some the most underrated artists of our generation. Peep some of the excerpts.
On some of his most memorable Tupac moments or verses:
I can’t say it right on the spot but ‘Pac was amazing. He just so brilliant and bright, forward thinking and had his hands on the fort moving the generation and you still see it today in a movement with young people standing up for themselves, standing up for what’s right and that’s all who Pac was.
On the state of R&B music today:
The state of R&B— you know— we’ve become really, really hip hop. We’ve started to move towards…when I say Hip Hop, I don’t mean technically rap— I mean lifestyle. I believe we’ve become completely more Hip Hop than what I think, I’m not even sure if R&B had an identity at the end of the day—basically the music is what the identity was. It wasn’t really a cultural identity thing.
On who he would put in his R&B supergroup:
Ooooooo…..who would I choose? I would have to sit and think about it. I think Tank is an amazing singer…ummm where would I go with it? I’ve always been a fan—musically of R. Kelly and if he didn’t have the drama that was surrounded him, there would be a no brainer. Um, that’s a tough question (laughs).
On his thoughts on the most underrated artists:
Well me— number one for the male. Over the years, I think it’s been understated and sort of overlooked but uhhh on the female side, man! it’s a couple of them— I would say Jazmine Sullivan and Brandy somewhat, sometimes is underrated, she’s one of the most amazing vocalists, one of the most beautiful voices out there.
