Maxine Waters Has A Message For Young Black Girls
In a recent interview with The Grio, Congresswoman Maxine Waters shares personal memories about her childhood, the women’s movement and what inspired her career in politics. She also shares a message for young, black women. Check out the excerpts below.
On her advice to young black women:
What’s so very important to teach young black girls is: Love yourself. No matter what anybody says about you, be confident that you’re special. And we have to make sure that not only do we teach them that, but we have to act that ourselves.
On her early days in the Women’s Rights Movement:
“When I went into the legislature, they called everyone ‘assemblyman,’ so I set out to change that, and boy did they take me on. They really, really slammed me around. But, I became accustomed to knowing and understanding that there was something that was a little bit different about my approach.
On why she’s rallying millennials to be politically involved:
I want to be a catalyst to get these young people involved, to get them inside the Democratic party and change it and make it what they think it should be, representing all of the people and having a real place at the table.
